Thanks to the arrangements made by Dr. Kenji Nakayama of Niigata University of Health and Welfare, faculty and students from Chung Shan Medical University's (CSMU) Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, led by Dr. Yu-Wei Chang, recently made another successful visit to the Shimadzu Tokyo Innovation Center in Kawasaki, Japan. There, they engaged in very productive discussions with Shimadzu's leading developers.
This trip was particularly enhanced by the presence of Dr. Yao-Jen Chang, Director of the Drug Testing Center at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital (CSMUH). Together, they delved into crucial topics, including the latest trends in global illicit drug analysis and the use of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization–Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) for rapid microbial identification.
During the visit, participants gained a deeper understanding of advanced analytical techniques by observing the instruments in operation. Currently, CSMUH has actively incorporated these cutting-edge technologies into its practical applications. The Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) system in the Drug Testing Center and the MALDI-TOF/MS system used for rapid microbial identification in the Microbiology Laboratory are both actively contributing to public health and clinical practice, playing a vital role in safeguarding public well-being.
This exchange not only strengthened the partnership between Chung Shan Medical University and Shimadzu but also provided invaluable learning opportunities for faculty and students, helping to elevate Taiwan's technical capabilities in the fields of drug analysis and microbial identification.
